Split Times Text Messaging FAQ

Q: How does it work?

When an event uses our Live Results Service for sending event information like splits, standings, scores, etc. for internet reporting, you can then get that information about your friends and family sent to your cell phone.

When you sign up to get split times messages from our server, tell us what the event/bib number is.   When it is time for you to get an update our system will send you a Text Message of the most recent information from our Live Results server.

Q: What is a text message (SMS)?

SMS stands for Short Message Service, and it is synonymous with Text Message, Text, TXT, etc. An SMS (Text Message) is a short message, which can be sent to and from a cellular phone.

Q: Can my phone receive text messages?

Nearly all phones purchased in the last ten years are capable of sending and receiving text messages.

Q: Can I get messages in my Email instead of on my cell phone?

Yes.  Messages can be sent to your email address instead of your cell phone.

Q: What is the difference between cell phone (SMS) and Email Split Times Messaging?

SMS (cell phone) messages are sent through the phone lines that are directly connected to all the major cell phone carriers. Deliverability rates are extremely reliable, and your messages are received with minimal delay. Delivery speed and reliability is comparable to sending a text message from one cell phone to another.

Email message deliverability rates are dependant upon factors such as web traffic, network delays, network downtime, and SPAM filters. These factors can lead to delays and/or dropped messages.  Just like any email message sent today.

Q: What does it cost?

For pricing information please see our pricing page

Q: Will my carrier charge for received messages?

That depends on your cell phone carrier and your text messaging package.  Each carrier offers different text messaging packages.

Q: What will the message I receive look like?

If the person you are tracking has finished, the message will look like...
# 234 Finish at 3:57:12 (2)
 - This message means bib # 234 finished the event at 3hours, 57 minutes, and 12 seconds on the clock. The (2) indicates that there are 2 remaining texts available for this bib #.

If the person is still on the course, the message will look like...
# 1302 10K at 45:12 ETA 10m=1:12:54 ETA Fin=3:10:59 (4)
 - This message means bib # 1302 crossed the 10k split at 45minutres and 12 seconds on the clock, is expected to react the 10 mile split at 1 hour, 12 minutes, and 54 seconds on the clock and is expected to finish the event at 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 59 seconds on the clock. The (4) indicates that there are 4 remaining texts available for this bib #.

Q: Can I get information on more than one person?

Yes. You can get Split Times Messaging updates on as many people as you want as long as they are included in the the information the event sends to our Live Results server.

Q: How long does it take to get my message?

SMS Text Messages are usually delivered to mobile phones in a few seconds to a few minutes. During peak hours, there could be a short delay. Please note that additional delays may occur if your phone is turned off or out of the coverage area. When this happens a carrier will attempt to deliver your message for up to 72 hours.  But the event will be over by then, so you'll already know the results.

Email message deliverability rates are dependant upon factors such as web traffic, network delays / downtime, and SPAM filters. These factors can lead to delays and/or dropped messages.  Just like any email message sent today.

Q: Do you guarantee delivery of every Text Message that I ask for?

No. As text messaging is a store-and-forward technology dependent on carriers and their networks, it is impossible to guarantee delivery of a text message.

Q: What do I need to use Split Times Messaging?

All you need is a cell phone with Text Messaging or Email capabilities or a regular internet Email account.

Q: Where Does Split Times Messaging Work?

Split Times Messaging works in the United States (including Alaska and Hawaii).
